Match Report Indus-II vs NCCA Youth 05/01/2010

Report by Rakesh

1st Innings
Session - 1
Pradeep and Rajeev started cautiously on a wet pitch. On the thickish outfield ground shots got little value and with some aggression the score moved onto 23/0 in 10. Rajeev fell for a sweetly timed shot to short midwicket. Barry and Pradeep then had a good partnership to take Indus to 49/1 in 15. The runrate was picking up and Indus looked to get a good score.
NCCA Youth introduced a decent legspinner Omar who was made to look like Warne by some really bad shot making. Pradeep fell for an aggressive shot for a well made but unsatisfying 29. Prem then pulled a short ball and was unfortunate to find a fielder take a beauty Myself then hit a fullltoss from same bowler straight to the midicket boundary. Barry lost his cool after scoring 16 and continued Indus's charitable catch practice session to ensure NCCA youth do well in the Nationals.:) . At 62/5 in 22 overs things were looking very dismal. Pavan had different ideas. Mausam joined him and looked an ideal foil until over 28 when Preetam mentioned Mausam and run-out in the same sentence. Next ball it did happen. Krish joined Pavan and carried Indus to 75/6.
Pavan and Krish showed all their experience and maturity in crafting a superb partnership, With singles hard to come with normally played shots and a tight field Pavan played the bowlers beautifully placing the ball in all the gaps. The straight hit shots of the spinner were matched with good drives off pacers, but taking the cake was the super 6 hit straight of ex-Ranji player Dasarath. Krish was the ideal foil playing out the tough balls and rotating the strike well. In over 42 after Indus reached a decent 128 runs, Pavan hit a mammoth straight shot that was caught right on the boundary ending a superb fighting knock of 36 runs with a strike rate of around 100. All this acheived without a semblance of risk. What also ended was a superb partnership of 58. Krish and the tailenders then took the score to 137 with Krish's innings ending at 13.

2nd Innings
Session - 1
Indus opening bowlers uncharachteriticall y bowled a little wayward trying to get an early breakthrough. Abhi took Jodha off a beauty to Rajeev at slips with score reading 25. Indus alumni Kapil frustrated until Mausam finally got him out 2nd time (he was out off a Mausam no ball) at score of 40 in over 7. Although there were play and misses,Youth mainintained a healthy run rate increasing the anxiety of the bowlers as they coasted to 52/2 after over 9. Krish then took AkashJ's wicket to invigorate the Indus fielders who were led admirably by Barry who again rattled the batters with his insights into their techniques. Unfortunately indus couldnt breakthrough again as Zulfi Nana and Adhiraj took the score to 69/3 in 15.
Session - 2
Indus bowlers toiled hard with little success as Srini started a spell of legspin. After a few loose balls he tightened up to bowl an excellent line and length and deserved Adhiraj on 2 occassions but it wasnt his day. He did take the calm Zee out as the score read 100. 38 still needed a miracle looked possible. shashank and Pavan bowled inspired spells as runs primarily came through edges. Shashank took Happy out with a smart cach at gully by Prem and Youth were 123/5 at 30.
Session - 3
Pavan and Shashank were making it miserable for the Youth to score runs of the bat but there werent many runs to work with as defeat looked imminent. Then came a stunner that should inspire this team for the whole season. Abbas hits a ball in the air around Forward point, Barry steps back a few steps then realises hes not there yet so he turns around and runs blindsided (ala Kapil world cup 75) and picks the ball inches of the ground to take one of the best catches in NCCA (easily the best Ive seen).
Pavan - 8 overs, 4 maidens, 8 runs. Shashank - 2/27, Srini,Krish, Mausam,Abhi - 1 wicket each.
Barry/Pradeep/ Rajeev/Prem/ Rakesh/Shashank - 1 catch each.
Indus had a honest 45 minute chat after game that should help get their focus back to winning when their season resumes after a 3 week break.
